Surprisingly Honest Review of My Wild Hair Journey with Bask and Lather (And How I’m Bouncing Back)

Gather ’round, folks, and let me tell you a tale of hair horror, an epic saga of itchy shenanigans, scalp scabs, and the calamitous case of the limp locks. I’m talking about my personal misadventure with Bask and Lather Hair Products. Grab a cup of tea and some biscuits, because this is one you won’t want to miss.

The Initial Enthusiasm

Now, before anyone starts clutching their pearls or pointing fingers, let me just say — I’m fine! I’m healthy, I eat well, I guzzle about a gallon of water daily, I exercise, and my natural hair was thriving long before I met these products. In short, my hair wasn’t crying for help before this little experiment.

When I first heard about Bask and Lather hair products, I was intrigued. I’ll admit it—I was especially drawn in by the chance to support a Black‑Owned Business, and I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” With rave reviews popping up everywhere on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, it seemed like a no‑brainer. What I didn’t do, however, was check with the Better Business Bureau first—something I strongly suggest you do—before believing all the promises about transforming hair into luscious, flowing manes straight out of a shampoo commercial. As someone who has always taken pride in my naturally healthy hair, I was genuinely curious to see if these products could actually elevate my hair game.

With high hopes and a slightly lighter wallet (I’m looking at you, $60 purchase), I dove headfirst into the world of Bask and Lather Hair Products. Little did I know, I was signing up for a hair journey that would leave me scratching my head—literally and figuratively. It’s a good thing I didn’t splurge on the shampoo and conditioner too, or I might have ended up with a bald head.

The Itchy Situation

Bask and Lather Hair ProductsI started with the scalp stimulator, thinking it would invigorate my roots and lead to hair greatness. Well, invigorate it did! But instead of a gentle tingling, it was more like my scalp was hosting a rave with itchy, uninvited guests. I soon found myself scratching like there was no tomorrow, giving myself a lovely set of scabs in the process. My scalp was a battleground, and the itch was winning.

In a bid for relief, I washed my hair and decided to give the stimulating scalp and hair balm a shot. Surely, it couldn’t be as bad, right? Wrong. It was like déjà vu with an extra scoop of irritation. I had to rewash my hair just to get some peace. My mom used to say, “A little itch can mean your hair is growing.” But this was no growth spurt; it was a full-blown drought on my scalp.

The Battle of the Brittle

As if the itching weren’t already irritating, my once lively and bouncy hair had now become lifeless and limp. My previous hair care routine, which included trusty Jamaican black castor oil, African shea butter, and water of course, had my hair living its best life. Twist outs were poppin’, and my hair was the envy of many. But now, it seemed my hair had gone on strike, refusing to cooperate or even look remotely lively.

Every time I combed my hair, I was greeted with an alarming amount of loose strands. My comb? Collecting evidence of every broken strand.

The Curling Cream I’d purchased in hopes of reviving my curls only sat on my hair, mocking me. No amount of massaging or coaxing could get it to absorb. Just so you know, I followed the instructions to a T, but the result was still far from what I had hoped for.

The Reckoning

So, here I am, with half-empty bottles of disappointment and a $60 reminder of a hair experiment gone wrong. I considered donating the remaining products, but I wouldn’t even wish what I had experienced on that coworker who ate my clearly-labeled lunch last week.

“I didn’t want anyone else scratching like they had a family of lice setting up camp on their scalp.”

Despite my less-than-stellar experience, I’m not here to bash Bask and Lather hair products entirely. Hair is a peculiar thing, and what didn’t work for me might just be the magic potion someone else needs. But as for me and my hair, we’re going back to our roots—literally—with Jamaican black Castor Oil and African Shea Butter. Sometimes, the good old basics are all you need.

The Road to Recovery

3 1

Now, I’m on a mission to nurse my hair back to health. I’m concocting my own hair potions, butters and lotions, because if anyone knows my hair, it’s me. I’ll take this experience as a learning opportunity and a reminder that sometimes, the grass isn’t greener on the other side—it’s just full of dandruff.

If you’re considering trying Bask and Lather hair products, proceed with caution. It might be the solution you’ve been searching for, or it might leave you with a head full of itch and regret. As for me, I’ll be sticking to what I know works and keeping my hair care routine as simple and itch-free as possible.

Take it from me, a woman who had never had itchy scalp or dandruff her whole life. Hair care is a journey, folks and sometimes, you take a detour down “Itchy Avenue.” But that’s just another chapter in the never-ending story of hair adventures. Here’s to hoping my hair will soon be back to its glorious, shiny, curly self, ready to take on the world one twist out at a time.

Lessons Learned (a.k.a. The Scalp Chronicles)

After going through all of this, I came to a few lessons worth sharing:

  1. Just because it’s trending doesn’t mean your scalp agrees. Popularity isn’t compatibility.
  2. Patch-test everything. Especially scalp oils or balms with intense essential oils like peppermint or rosemary.
  3. Know your hair’s history. My curls were used to natural oils like black castor and shea—adding all those new ingredients was like shocking the system.
  4. Don’t ignore irritation. If your scalp sounds any alarm—ITCHING, BURNING, TIGHTNESS—wash it out immediately.
  5. It’s okay to move on. Supporting Black-owned doesn’t mean forcing your scalp through misery. You can cheer them on from afar and still keep your sanity.
  6. … and ALWAYS check with the Better Business Bureau.
